Lost in Palm Springs
@HOTA from 11 Mar - 21 May 2023
Art, Architecture and Design
Lost in Palm Springs is an interdisciplinary exhibition bringing together 14 creative minds -
including internationally recognised artists, photographers and thinkers from America and Australia -
who respond to, capture, or reimagine the magical qualities of the landscape and the
celebrated mid-century modern architecture found in the desert city.
Connections between Palm Springs and Australia are remarkably strong, particularly when
viewed through the lens of the current renaissance of interest in modernist architecture,
place and home, desert atmospheres, landscaped (real and imagined), and Bauhaus
sensibilities inform the works.

A new exhibition of watercolour paintings of mid 20th century beach houses along the Qld southern coast line. They are hanging on a thin thread and I thought they are worth documenting. So I took off with my camera last year and captured them. The resulting watercolours are mostly a realistic representation but as the title indicates, they've seen better days and the paintings show subtle marks of decay and a sense of emptiness. Lets face it beach houses are empty most of the year.
They are being pulled down and new huge mansions are built on small blocks of land. These holiday homes have a special place in the Australian collective consciousness.
Splash Contemporary Watercolour Award is granted for an outstanding original art work in the medium of watercolour. Very excited to have been selected, my painting "Tower of Hope" represents one of the Housing Commission Apartment Blocks in Collingwood, near my Studio.
